What can we expect from Exeter City FC in the 2024/2025 season
League One season is starting soon, and the Exeter City Football Club is getting ready to come back out on the field.
The club has a long and interesting history of rising and falling through the leagues. Exeter FC had to work its way up from fourth division to League One. This season is expected to be a struggle, with many betting sites suggesting relegation is on the cards.
After being relegated to League Two at the end of the 2011-2012 season, Exeter FC managed to rejoin League One in 2021-2022.
The club managed to do so thanks to hard work, smart investment, unity, and fan ownership.
The team has now been playing in League One for two seasons. This will be their third season.
But what can we expect from the Grecians? How will they perform this year?
Let’s look at Exeter FC’s performance over the last two seasons.
Last season’s performance
Let’s quickly refresh our memory by looking at Exeter FC’s performance over the last two seasons.
- Exeter City FC’s performance in 2023/24
Exeter finished mid-table in the 2023/24 season, with a 13th placed finish.
Last season, the club’s leading goal scorer was Reece Cole. He scored a total of 7 goals.
- Exeter City FC’s performance in 2022/23
The 2022/23 season saw a 14th place finish, mid-table again.
The club’s top scorer that year was Sam Nombe. He scored 15 goals during the season, more than double what Reece Cole scored.
Although Sam Nombe scored more goals than Reece Cole, there was a lack of goals from elsewhere which meant the club could only achieve mid-table rather than a play-off push.
- How the League One point system works
As a quick reminder, here is how the point system works in the EFL League One.
When a team wins, they get three points.
When a team draws, they get one point.
When a team loses, they get zero points.
In other words, to get a high number of points, clubs want to win as much as possible or draw at the very least. A club gets to play twice against each club during the League One season.
This increases their chances of scoring some points and gives them a chance to go for a rematch when they don’t win.
Now, considering Exeter FC’s performance over the last two seasons, what can we expect from them this season?
Exeter FC’s possible 2024-2025 season
The good news is that last season’s top scorer is still at Exeter.
Reece Cole will remain one of the club’s central midfielders for the season to come.
If his performance this season is anything like last season’s, the club will hope to silence the doubters and push for a mid-table finish.
Hopefully, Reece Cole and his teammates can even surpass last season’s performance.
The other good news is that the club’s manager is still around. Gary Caldwell has been managing Exeter City for two years now.
The team’s good performance over these last two seasons proves that Caldwell is a competent manager.
Hopefully, he knows his players even better now and can get them to surpass themselves this season.
In terms of transfers, we know that there have been several changes in the team and some contracts have been extended.
For example, Cheick Diabate’s contract has been extended. He will now play with Exeter City until, at least, the end of the 2024/2025 season.
Four new players are joining the club for this new season. They are Jack McMillan, Josh Magennis, Jay Bird and Ryan Woods.
Although these players are undoubtedly talented, they are joining the club a little bit late. They signed with Exeter City on the 1st of June when the League One season starts on the 9th of August.
In other words, these transfers might go smoothly but they might also impact the team’s overall performance.
After all, it takes time for team members to adapt to each other’s playing style and to find the right team dynamic on the field.
That being said, Caldwell is a good manager. He has retained some great players including Reece Cole and Cheick Diabate.
The club will most likely perform well this upcoming season despite the transfers and last-minute changes.
Final thoughts
Exeter City is a great club with a lot of potential. The club will most likely perform well this upcoming season.
Despite some transfers and last-minute changes in the team, Caldwell seems confident that the new players will integrate well and will improve the club’s performance.
