The pink fizz is chilling in readiness for the 2019 Twilight Walk!
Saturday 6 July will be a BIG day in Exmouth for local charity Hospiscare. Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare will be holding their Family Fun Day at Manor Gardens from 10am – 4pm with live entertainment and lots of fun activities. Having had a great day with the whole family it will then be time for the mums, nans and aunties to don their pink tutus and bunny ears (not compulsory) and head on down to The Maer for either the Twilight Walk or 5K Fizz Run in aid of Hospiscare.
This sponsored event offers a scenic five or ten mile walking route or a 5K running route along the stunning Exmouth seafront. The walkers will set off at 6.30pm, followed by the runners at 7pm. There will be entertainment along the way and you will be welcomed back to The Maer where a glass of pink fizz and supper will be waiting for you at the finish line.
Last year just over 1000 women took part, all for a variety of reasons, one being Sue Jenkin, who completed the five mile route in her mobility scooter!
Earlier last year due to terminal lung disease, Sue’s doctor suggested she should be referred to Hospiscare. Sue had a Hospiscare nurse that supported her at home and she came into Searle House once a week for a day care session. She said it made a huge difference to the quality of her life.
“It’s a wonderful place with wonderful staff. I feel so well supported. When I come into Searle House nothing is too much trouble for the staff and volunteers. Whatever you need help with, they are there to support you and they cheer me up no end. They paint my nails, give me a foot massage and next week I am going to have a one to one yoga session to help with my breathing.”
It was whilst attending the day care session at Searle House that Sue learnt of the Twilight Walk taking place in her home town of Exmouth. Sue was determined to raise awareness and some money for the charity and declared that she would be the first person to complete the walk on a mobility scooter!
In the balmy sunshine, armed with three portable oxygen cylinders and a fully charged battery pack, Sue set off, proudly donning number 1 across her chest. She was quoted as saying, “I can`t thank Hospiscare enough for the help they are giving me and want more people to know about this amazing charity.”
In completing the five mile Twilight Walk route, Sue raised an incredible £522 for the charity, which she proudly presented at the following day care session. Sadly on 12 August 2018 (only five weeks after The Twilight Walk), Sue died peacefully on the ward at Searle House.
