National Grid issue safety plea of ‘look out, look up’ to farmers in Devon

“Look out, look up” and stay safe around electrical equipment is the message to Devon farmers from National Grid Electricity Distribution as Farm Safety Week (22-26 July) kicks off today.

Community garden put down roots in Broadclyst to fight food poverty in Exeter

A community garden project has received over £17,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK, to grow fresh produce for food banks and food action initiatives in Exeter and the surrounding area.

Giant Redwood tree to be felled after sadly deteriorating

A giant redwood tree on an allotment site in Exeter will have to be felled after noticeably deteriorating over the last year.

The Sequioadendron giganteum – also known in the UK as a ‘Wellingtonia’ or giant redwood – which is located on the Pinces Gardens Allotments, will have to be brought down for safety reasons. There is another giant redwood standing close by which is unaffected.

Massive quayside wall works completed by Exeter waterside

Crucial work to strengthen a high-profile wall on Exeter’s quayside are now complete, the City Council has announced.

The local authority carried out repairs and stabilisation to a 105-metre stretch of cliff face wall above Exeter Quay on the city centre side of the River Exe.

The 100th anniversary of the Devon County Library Service is being marked this month by Libraries Unlimited, the charity that manages 54 libraries in Devon and Torbay.

The Devon County Library Service was launched in 1924 with the aim of providing a single county-wide service giving all residents free access to books. Before then, many of Devon’s individual scattered community libraries were operated by subscription, or aligned to institutions such as the church, or funded by individual local authorities from people’s ‘rates’.
